For Japanese food, Parco Ramen on Hall Street is a good place to start. Nearby, Hero Sushi (25 Hall Street) and Umiyaki (21 Pratt Street) suit a quick meal. For something more relaxed, Kinkura is inside Moonee Ponds Central, and Fuji Teppanyaki cooks at the table on Mt Alexander Road. My Little Bento on Margaret Street is handy for takeaway.
Korean barbecue fans should head to Chingu Korean BBQ at 682 Mt Alexander Road. Meanwhile, Dumpling House (2A Everage Street) and Oriental Flavour Asian Cuisine (125 Puckle Street) cover Chinese favourites.
Indian
There are several Indian restaurants in Moonee Ponds. New Paradise is right on Puckle Street, while Banyan Tree and Swagath Grand are both on Mt Alexander Road. Al Karim’s is a little further out, at 35 Aspen Street.
Italian and pizza
For pasta and a glass of wine, Toni Pasta and Wine is at 31 Hall Street. Escagrill serves modern Italian on Mt Alexander Road, and Domenico’s Pizza and Pastaria is on Ascot Vale Road.
Pizza lovers are spoilt for choice. Try Farro Pizzeria on Puckle Street, Via Monte Pizzeria on Mt Alexander Road or Carosello on Margaret Street. For a quick bite, Pazzo Panini is on Puckle Street.
Greek and Turkish
Philhellene on Mt Alexander Road is a long-standing local favourite for Greek food. Zeus Street Greek on Hall Street is a casual option. For Turkish, visit Taksim Square at 561 Mt Alexander Road.
Mexican and Spanish
Latin Quarters Taqueria (6 Margaret Street) and Hecho en Mexico (14 Pratt Street) both serve Mexican food. For Spanish-style tapas, GK Tapas Bar & Restaurant is at 14 Margaret Street, and it runs cooking classes too.
Steak, grills, burgers and chicken
Macelleria on Hall Street is the place for steak. Grill Direction on Mt Alexander Road focuses on barbecue. For burgers, try Royal Stacks on Puckle Street. If you’re after chicken, Local Chook (9 Hall Street) and Rooster Delight (6 Homer Street) are both close by.
Pubs and bars with dining
For a pub meal, the Mt Alexander Hotel and the Junction Club are both on Mt Alexander Road. Holmes Hall on Holmes Road is a large bar and eatery. In addition, Saros Bar & Dining is in The Sebel on Homer Street, and TOTE Bar & Dining is at the Moonee Valley racecourse.
Brunch and casual dining
Not every meal needs to be dinner. Sir Duke on Puckle Street is popular for breakfast and lunch. Mon Paris on Shuter Street is a French-style café and patisserie. For European deli food, try Sammy’s Deli on Pratt Street.
