Sorry, I can’t hang out this weekend. I’m fully booked.

…Booked with solo self-made appointments to read my new books, that is!

After strolling through Moonee Ponds on a leisurely Saturday and eating and drinking the best this awesome suburb has to offer, I found I was still hungry for something. However, it wasn’t something I could eat. Or even something I could drink. It was more so something I could consume, and that would ultimately consume me and all of my time for the next several days (if not longer). A dish of sorts that would transport me to any world I could think of, followed by a dessert containing the tastiest morsels of information imaginable.

Fellow bookworms: This one’s for you.

This article explores the best cheap book shops to visit in Moonee Ponds, where you can find something for yourself, the kids, and your friends, and even pick up a present for the upcoming holidays. There’s no better way to transport yourself to a different world or time than through a good book, so head on down to your local bookstore today!

Treat Yo’ Shelf With These Moonee Ponds Booksellers

If you’ve heard the phrase ‘get your nose out of that book’ more than once, you can relax. You’re with your people now.

  1.   Academic & High School Bookshop

If you’re a student— or have been a student at any point in the last few decades— you’ll know just how expensive textbooks can be. Whether the textbook you need is scientific, mathematical, literary, or something else entirely, you can easily fork over hundreds of dollars for maybe two or three books if you buy them brand new. What makes matters worse is the fact that you’ll inevitably only need it once or twice during your course, and both times will be within the first week! After that, your expensive textbook is not much more than a paperweight or doorstop. And if that’s what you wanted to buy, that’s what you would have bought!

Even books on the required reading lists for your classes that aren’t straight-up textbooks can be extremely pricey. When the bookstore with an affiliation with your school or university knows that everybody needs a copy of a particular novel, for instance, you’ll know you can find it there— but at what cost? You’re going to school to find a good career and make money, not spend your life savings on books! At times like these, you could really use a cheap bookshop.

Along comes Moonee Ponds’ Academic and High School Bookshop. This independent bookstore at 700 Mt. Alexander Road is open six days a week (closed on Sundays) for all of your serious studying needs. They’re no ordinary academic bookstore, though, as you’ll find what you need at a fraction of the price you’d pay buying it new. As an academic bookshop and discount bookshop, it’s hard to top Academic and High School Bookshop as the best second-hand bookshop in Moonee Ponds.

At Academic and High School Bookshop they buy and sell second-hand books and can also order new books for high school and university students. Just email your school booklist and they’re on it! As you’re likely well aware, finding all the books you or your child needs for school or uni can be a big hassle. Not here! At Academic and High School Bookshop, they’re all here under one roof. On top of that, they also buy and sell general books, so if you’re looking for a particular book that’s proving hard to find, it may just be here waiting for you.

Owner Niki is well-known for her friendly and professional customer service and her mission to always go above and beyond to help her customers. If you’re looking for a book for school, uni, or even just for fun, stop by Academic and High School Bookshop today!

  1.   Collectors Edge Comics

Looking for a book that’s more of an action-adventure than academic? Can’t blame you there! We all need an escape from everyday life every now and then, no matter how old or young we may be. Comics aren’t just for kids, so if superhero adventures are up your alley, go for it!

Collectors Edge, at 14 Everage Street, has a wide range of comics to suit every comic fan at every budget. The staff are renowned for their passion for comics and customer service alike, so whatever you come here for, you know you’ll leave happy. If you can’t immediately find what you’re looking for, just let them know, and they’ll be happy to help.

The new releases are updated regularly with the latest from DC and Marvel, along with Boom Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW, and Image Comics. No matter which superhero— or villain— is your favourite, you’ll always be up to date with their latest antics thanks to Collectors Edge Comics. They also have a vast number of graphic novels, magazines, and novels, so if you’re a comic fan of any kind you’ll be well taken care of here.

Not only is Collectors Edge the best place in Moonee Ponds to get your comics and graphic novels, but it’s also a one-stop shop for collectibles and action figures. Funko Pops line the walls featuring characters from all your favourite movies and TV shows, and action figures from Marvel Legends are proving incredibly popular. With over 1,200 action figures ranging from $13 to $525 and covering an endless number of universes, one trip to Collectors Edge Comics can set you up for a year’s worth of presents easily. Whether you give them to the intended recipient or end up keeping them to yourself, though, is up to you!

Last but not least, we (and by we, I mean Collectors Edge) have Lego. Doctor Who, Star Wars, or your favourite type of car, you can build to your heart’s content and admire your creation as you display it in your home oh so proudly. Okay, and as a huge Pokemon fan, I can’t not mention the trading cards selection! While the trading cards here cover the NFL, UEFA champions league, and other collectibles as well, if you have a Pokemon fan in your house, you’re going to need the Pokemon Go Elite Trainer Box immediately.

If you don’t have a dedicated room for all your comics, action figures, trading cards, and everything else that encompasses your hobby, may I also suggest a new home to go with your purchases? Just a thought.

  1.   Collins Booksellers

Don’t get me wrong, second-hand bookshops are heaven for book lovers. They’re so great in so many ways, but the one thing they’re often lacking is new books. When a new novel by your favourite author comes out, waiting just isn’t an option— you need that book, and you need it now! When you desperately need a new book and, despite your best efforts, you haven’t become a billionaire overnight, you need a cheap bookstore that’s also one of the best booksellers in the country.

Collins Booksellers is a name known around the nation by almost everybody, whether they’re big book nerds like us or not. After all, they were founded in 1922, making them the big 100 this year! With 30 franchised stores nationwide, including one at 67 Puckle Street in Moonee Ponds, it’s a name synonymous with literature. Collins Booksellers is a haven for voracious readers of all ages, backgrounds, and interests, where you can find everything from the classics to new releases and books on your niche-st of niche interests.

Whatever style of writing or genre of book you have in mind, you’ll find it here. From children’s fiction to current affairs, gardening to graphic novels, and philosophy to politics, Collins Booksellers will have just the book (or books) for you. Not sure what you’re looking for? No worries! The staff here are well-versed in giving excellent recommendations. Whether you’re looking for something new to read or you’re looking for a gift for somebody else, it’s done and dusted here.

Dying to know what happens next in your favourite mystery series? Head straight to crime fiction (and don’t be scared). Maybe you’ve exhausted your list of easy weeknight dinners and are hoping to find some new recipes— if so, the cooking section is calling your name. Keen to get lost in somebody else’s life and take a break from your own? Biographies have got your back. Books for any mood are easy to find here at Collins Booksellers.

Reading? What A Novel Idea

As convenient and fun as streaming services are, they just can’t replace the feeling of a good book in your hand while you cradle a cup of hot tea or coffee. And don’t even get me started on the smell (of the books that is, though the aroma of coffee always goes well with it)! Second-hand bookshops, independent bookstores, and cheap bookshops are aplenty in Moonee Ponds, so don’t let another moment pass without taking your brain on an adventure. Up, up, and away!
