Join us in welcoming one of the newest traders in Moonee Ponds; meet Gamze Ersan of Salcha!
How did they decide to name their restaurant? Salcha is the Turkish name for tomato paste and has a prominent place in the fridge or cupboard of every Turkish household and it’s the ingredient that Gamze loves using in almost all her dishes, hence the name “Salcha” was born, which was suggested to her by her partner David Bon.
The business has been operating for at least two months now and they specialise in Beef and Chicken Doner Kebabs, a traditional Turkish cuisine, and Smoked Meat. Their kebabs are prepared in-house and their meat has been hand sliced and marinated for 24 hours to produce a juicy, and extremely tasty kebab.
They also have an absolutely delicious American style cuisine on the menu. Their briskets have been smoked for more than 12 hours using the finest hickory, which as a result, give a unique and full-flavoured taste. The ribs are slow-cooked using their unique blend of herbs and spices, and completed with their homemade BBQ sauce.
Gamze has always enjoyed cooking and like so many others, COVID had hit her previous business as an education consultant. But this ultimately gave her the opportunity to open Salcha and pursue something she had always dreamed of and that is to successfully open a small eatery.
Salcha has paved the way to her bringing the taste which she grew up with in Turkey to the streets of Moonee Ponds, in which she is now a resident! So there are actually loads of dishes to choose from by local workers that come in the afternoons to local residents that come in the evening. Their HSPs are usually more popular with their younger customers. So there’s really something for everyone to love at Salcha!
So if you haven’t been to Salcha yet, it’s about time to do so and it’s a guarantee that you’ll have a new favourite once you step into their store and try one or more of their perfectly delectable Turkish cuisines!
